Daybreak Live Blog

Hello. Ceri Thomas here, rather than Coops. I’ll be blogging about the first ever chunk of Daybreak. Click on comment below to chip in with your views. You can also follow MSN Editor Coops on Twitter where she’s commenting on the show too.

6:00 – Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley are back together for their new ITV show. For my money, Adrian’s looking the more relaxed. Surprising, since he’s never really struck me as a morning person.

6:10 – First things first, that’s one heck of a set. Great view over London. Watching the sun come up over the city as the show goes on is going to be fun.

6:18 – Nearly got a flash of page 3 in The Sun as they look through the papers there. Good save from Christine…

6:24 – Neat little bit of business as Adrian crosses the studio to handle the "man’s job" that is chatting about sport (he’s going to get some stick about that…). He really does look at home here.

6:29 – "We’re in uncharted territory here! We’ve never done a show lasting more than half an hour together before…" I wouldn’t be too worried, Adrian. Looking good so far as we head into the news.

6:35 – And we’re off to a break as the sun comes up over Ilkley Moor. Enjoying this so far. Christine seems to have calmed down a bit and the boy Chiles is playing a blinder.

6:41 – The most shocking thing so far has got to be that glimpse of a young Prince Charles there. So, there’s going to be an appearance from the current greyer version of the heir to the throne on the show later this week then? Impressive.

6:42 – Daybreakers? So the spirit of That’s Life lives on, eh? Good to know that telly still firmly believes that you can’t go wrong with a performing dog and a funnily-shaped vegetable.

6:55 – So, Derren Brown’s show on Wednesday is the TV event of the week, is it, telly review guy? We beg to differ – surely the start of Daybreak is?

7:03 – Tony Blair later today and Prince Charles before the end of the week? They’re bringing out the big guns for the first week then.

7:10 – We’ve already caught a glimpse or two of Kate Garraway and now here’s John Stapleton as well. Good to see that the old GMTV crowd aren’t exactly on the dole.

7:17 – Quite like this 5-A-Day feature boiling down the news of the day to five soundbite length snippets.

7:19 – Ah, so that was why Adrian was looking down at Christine’s legs! He was worried about tripping when he went over to do the sport. Obvious, really…

7:20 – So, what do we all think so far? 40 minutes in and no disasters yet. In fact, I’d venture to say that it’s looking like a good show. All the Chiles-Bleakley chemistry seems thankfully intact anyway.

7:27 – Yep, they’re very pleased with this studio aren’t they? Much better than the sh… er, shoeboxes Adrian’s worked in before. Though that old grey phone would probably have fitted in perfectly to the old Match Of The Day 2 studio.

7:30 – Why has news lady Tasmyn seemingly coloured the top half of her face pink to match her jumper? The public need to know…

7:40 – And a big hand for another telly veteran, Dr Hilary Jones. Looking a bit ragged this morning though.

7.42 – What is on the floor next to Christine’s legs? What is Adrian looking at? He can’t just be ogling her pins, can he? Nice though they are…

7:50 – £10,000 for a pedal car! A PEDAL CAR!

7:52 – Ouch! Did Christine just get smacked in the chin by Mini Driver’s crash helmet? That could have been painful.

7:57 –  Liking Lucy the weather girl. And no, she probably wouldn’t be able to cycle in that skirt…

8:00 – And we make it to two hours. All going well, don’t you think? And the show’s not bad either. To get MSN TV Editor Lorna Cooper’s view of it all, head over to Twitter.

8:03 – Cut the news item a little short there to come back to the studio for a chat with the political editor.  Apparently, Tony Blair needs a cup of coffee in the morning. Hold the front page…

8:04 – And that’s why you hire Adrian Chiles. Even when the camera catches him off guard, scribbling notes, he just makes a gag of it and carries on seamlessly. He’s born for this nonsense, isn’t he?

8:10 – Jeez! How bright is Lorraine Kelly’s studio? You don’t need that at this time of the morning. I’ve got dots in front of my eyes…

8:14 – And there’s Tony Blair.

8:18 – "Kicking Brown while he’s down" Straight in with a tricky question there, Adrian.

8:21 – Not a bad first guest to get.

8:23 – So, Adrian’s last book didn’t sell well then?

8:25 – Not entirely sure that starting a new telly show is comparable to your first day as PM of the entire country, but a nice line out of the interview nonetheless!

8:28 – Aw, bless they’ve brought Mini Driver back out for the finish! And the skateboarding dog won the phone-in vote.

8:30 – And that’s that for the first Daybreak. I genuinely enjoyed that. Live telly made to look easy.

Well, the Adrian Chiles-Christine Bleakley telly marriage has survived the switch over to ITV. The first batch of Daybreak looked slick, but also friendly as a result.

Chiles may have a face made for radio, but he’s undoubtedly got a personality made for TV – even when Christine looked a bit nervy at the start, he just cruised on, punting out the TV big brother act he does so well.

If she was suffering from first night (alright, first morning…) nerves, they’d faded by the half-hour mark and it really did feel like business as usual for them. If only he’d stop staring at her legs though…

X Factor axes audience for Boot Camp

Cheryl Cole’s ongoing battle with malaria, alongside Dannii Minogue’s maternity leave, has necessitated a change to the format of X Factor.

The Boot Camp phase will now go ahead without a live audience watching.

Live audiences, so long a feature of Britain’s Got Talent, were introduced by Simon Cowell last year to freshen the X Factor format.

By and large, this has been a huge success but now show bosses have announced that the hopefuls will not perform for members of the public.

An X Factor representative said: "Due to the unusual circumstances, we are changing the format of Boot Camp slightly this year and we will not be inviting an audience to watch the contestants being put through their paces."

Cheryl Cole was diagnosed with malaria following a trip to Tanzania with her friend Derek Hough, of Dancing With The Stars fame (the US version of Strictly Come Dancing).

There are reports that the hopefuls in Dannii Minogue’s category will fly to Australia for the Judges’ Homes stage of the competition to mark her return to the show.

E4 bags choice honour at Freesat Awards 2010

Freesat has announced the winners of its annual Awards for 2010, with E4, ITV1 HD and CBeebies among those receiving honours.
Channels and services available on the subscription-free satellite TV service were recognised at the ceremony (which was hosted by comedian Ed Byrne). Here’s the list of winners:

Best Entertainment Channel: E4
Best Children’s Channel: CBeebies
Best News Channel: Al Jazeera English
Lifestyle Channel: Food Network UK
Best Music Channel: Flava
Best Themed Channel: Horror Channel
Best Shopping Channel: QVC
Best Specialist Radio Station: Absolute 80s
Judges’ Special Award: ITV1 HD
Viewers’ Choice for Channel of the Year (joint winners): Ideal World (TV); Planet Rock (radio)

E4 won Best Entertainment Channel for its original voice and for taking risks with programmes such as Misfits.

I’ll second that. E4 has grown and evolved from being little more than Channel 4’s dumping ground into a channel with a strong identity and brand. As for Flava, I’ve never watched it…

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan dies aged 76

Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-winning actress famous for starring in the hit 1980s TV series The Golden Girls, has died. Her manager Barbara Lawrence said the 76-year-old died from a stroke.

Born on February 21, 1934 in Oklahoma, Rue was active on the stage before branching out into television and movies. She had to wait until the 1980s before her role as The Golden Girls’ over-sexed, man-hungry Southern belle Blanche Devereaux brought her massive international fame.

The hit series centred on a group of elderly single women living in the same house together in Florida. Of the four, only veteran actress Betty White – who played Rose Nylund – is still alive. Bea Arthur (as acerbic Dorothy) and Estelle Getty (as Dorothy’s outspoken mother Sophia) passed away in 2009 and 2008 respectively.

The Golden Girls was nominated for many Emmy and Golden Globe awards, garnering both critical acclaim and impressive ratings. Its attitude towards sex, specifically sex for women over a certain age was pretty daring for its time. Nobody embodied this more than the flighty, flirty Blanche. She was always on the hunt for a man to take to bed.

"Your life’s an open blouse," the feisty Sophia said of Blanche. Quite simply, without The Golden Girls, and Rue McClanahan’s Blanche Devereaux in particular, there would be no Sex and the City. The Emmy she won for her work on the show in 1987 was well-deserved.

In addition to The Golden Girls, Rue’s other TV work included The Golden Palace (the flop Golden Girls spin-off), Law & Order, Columbo, Boy Meets World, Murder, She Wrote, Fantasy Island and Lou Grant.

The vegan and dedicated animal rights activist is survived by Morrow Wilson, her sixth husband whom she married in 1997, and a son from her first marriage. A gifted comedienne, her last screen appearance was in 2009.

Gary Coleman dies aged 42

Former child TV star Gary Coleman has died at the age of 42. He was admitted to hospital with a brain haemorrhage caused by a fall.
The actor, best known for playing Arnold Jackson on Diff’rent Strokes in the 1980s, was admitted to Utah’s Provo hospital on Wednesday.

His family said his condition worsened on Thursday and that he slipped into unconsciousness.

Gary Coleman had lived in Utah since 2005, when he starred in the movie Church Ball, a comedy based on basketball leagues formed by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He met his wife, Shannon Price, on the film set and married her in 2007.

Gary Coleman’s other TV roles included a stint in the popular sci-fi series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century starring Gil Gerard and guest roles on the likes of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Married With Children.

His death marks another sad chapter with regard to the Diff’rent Strokes cast. His co-star Todd Bridges (Willis Jackson) was abused as a child by a friend of his family; his career was stunted by frequent drug incidents.

Dana Plato, who played Kimberly Drummond, committed suicide via a pill overdose in 1999. On a related note, her son Tyler Lambert fatally shot himself in May 2010.

After Diff’rent Strokes was cancelled in 1986, Gary Coleman’s acting career never again reached the heights he’d once enjoyed. However, he was rarely out of the public eye thanks to a very colourful private life that included suing his parents over misappropriation of his trust fund, running for governor of California and various run-ins with the law.

He’ll be remembered as a very fine child star – one of a kind.

Report: presenter cull at GMTV

According to a report in the Daily Mail, ITV bosses are preparing to swing the axe at GMTV.

The remaining presenters – Andrew Castle, Kate Garraway and Emma Crosby – showbiz reporter Richard Arnold and weather girl Clare Nasir face an uncertain future as rumours fly that they’ll all be dropped in the summer.

The Daily Mail says it has learned that ITV boss Peter Fincham and daytime controller Alison Sharman are in favour of the move. Former BBC presenter Adrian Chiles, who’s signed a £6million deal with ITV, takes his place on the sofa in September. GMTV is expected to go off air, undergo a revamp and then return with Chiles at the helm.

An insider told the paper: "Quite honestly, everyone is running scared. Nobody knows what is happening as they are all waiting for Ian Rumsey [incoming editor] to arrive. But it looks like everyone will be going." Penny Smith, who has been with GMTV since 1993, is already on her way out and Ben Shephard has quit.

Lorraine Kelly has been quoted as saying: "It is very unsettling for everyone. It’s a tough time as no one knows what is going to happen. All we can do is pull together and hope for the best."

Meanwhile, Kate Garraway has admitted: "I’m worried, everyone is. Still, I’ve been here for 10 years and I’m so grateful for that. Anything else will be a bonus. We’re just keeping our fingers crossed."

Personally, I wouldn’t bet against further changes because, until fairly recently, GMTV used to lead the way in the ratings. Now it is regularly beaten by the more serious BBC Breakfast which averages around 1.2 million viewers daily to GMTV’s 700,000.

An ITV spokesman apparently told the Daily Mail: "No final decisions have been made." However, the speculation about the future of GMTV’s presenters continues.

Adrian Chiles quits the BBC

Adrian Chiles has quit the BBC. The TV presenter – who currently presents The One Show and Match of the Day 2 – has officially left to join ITV in a four-year deal.

As part of his new presenting projects, he’ll appear on GMTV and cover the World Cup for the commercial broadcaster this summer.
Adrian Chiles said: "The chance to front ITV’s football coverage and GMTV would have proved an irresistible opportunity at the best of times. But, coming as it did at an awkward period for me at the BBC, it made the decision to leave not quite as hard as it might have been."
This decision came shortly after BBC One controller Jay Hunt revealed plans to replace Adrian with Chris Evans on the Friday night instalments of The One Show – a move the 43-year-old admitted to being unhappy about.

"I would have been happy to stay at the BBC doing the same shows on the same terms, especially The One Show, of which I am so proud having worked on it since the first pilots four years ago," he said.

"It’s no secret how disappointed I was by the controller’s decision to change an apparently successful and well-loved show at this stage, but fully respect her right to do so and sincerely wish her and the brilliant One Show team well with it. I’ve spent all my working life at the BBC, working with and learning from some of the best people in the business.  I will miss all my friends and colleagues very much but can’t wait to get started with new people on two major new challenges for me at ITV."
A BBC spokesman said: "We would like to thank Adrian for his contributions to his programmes and we wish him well for the future."

How do you feel about this turn of events? Are you happy to see Adrian Chiles leave the BBC for ITV? Will you continue to watch The One Show? Let us know your view by leaving a comment – but please keep it clean.

Peter Andre chat show rumour denied

Proof, if proof was needed, that not everything you read in the papers is true. Yes, Peter Andre’s career is on the up and up – but not to the extent that it would enduce Channel 4 to give him his own chat show.

The Mirror had reported that the Aussie singer landed a deal worth £600,000 with a resulting time slot that would”ve pitted him against Friday Night With Jonathan Ross (just before the presenter leaves the BBC). However, Channel 4 has now denied this story.

I can see why this rumour may have started. Peter Andre has already helmed a talk show; he and ex-wife Katie Price attempted to become a bawdier, naughtier version of Richard and Judy with ITV2’s Katie and Peter: Unleashed. However, the programme wasn’t a hit with viewers or guests.

At the time, Coronation Street’s Jack P. Shepherd (David Platt) described it as "crude" and Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger labelled the format as "ridiculous".

However, as someone that watched Katie and Peter: Unleashed (albeit through my fingers), it was clearly apparent that while Katie Price was stiffer than my ironing board, Peter Andre looked at home as a TV host and presenter.

It’s a sentiment echoed by a source quoted in The Mirror as saying: "He’s a natural and is delighted that Channel 4 will give him free lience to grill his guests in an irreverent way. It will be a late-night format aimed at the 16-30s so he won’t have to mind is Ps and Qs." Turns out it was wishful thinking – but on whose part? Hmmmm.
